Transmission Fluid
When: 30,000 Miles
What? Transmission fluid is frequently misrepresented and misunderstood. Much like motor oil, it degrades over time, losing its viscosity and its ability to properly lubricate and protect the internal components of your transmission.
Why? While a transmission is not as harsh an environment as an engine, fluid degradation is still inevitable. Many modern transmissions are designed as sealed units that do not allow for a filter change, making clean, healthy fluid the only line of defense against internal wear. Furthermore, don’t be fooled by labels claiming “lifetime” fluid; manufacturers often define the vehicle’s life at 100,000 miles. If the fluid is never serviced, you will likely face significant transmission problems or a complete failure shortly after that milestone, making a rebuild or replacement inevitable.
When? I recommend a professional fluid and filter replacement every 30,000 miles. Because heat is the primary enemy of transmission health, you should increase the frequency of these services if you frequently tow, haul heavy loads, or work your vehicle hard. If you push your vehicle to its limits, installing an external transmission fluid cooler is also a highly effective way to extend the life of your transmission.
